Barrow Neurological Institute
of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center
Phoenix, Arizona
Education at Barrow is an unending quest to unlock the mysteries of the human brain and spine.
Barrow's commitment has always been to raise the bar of knowledge in the neurosciences as one of the last frontiers of exploration in modern medicine. Faculty members regularly conduct lectures at Barrow-sponsored educational conferences drawing physicians and other medical professionals from all over the country to learn about the latest surgical and medical innovations being developed at Barrow.
Grand Rounds in neurosurgery, neurology, and pediatric neuroscience are held weekly, often hosting visiting professors from leading teaching institutions around the world, to allow fellows and residents to broaden their base of knowledge in the field.
Residency and Fellowship Programs
With the largest neurosurgical residency program in the country and one of the largest neurology residency programs, Barrow is preparing the next generation of neurosurgeons and neurologists to diagnose and treat the ever-growing population of Americans afflicted with complex neurological diseases and disorders.

Community Education
To date our community education and prevention staff has reached well over 300,000 people in Arizona with injury prevention and stroke prevention programs. Barrow pioneered the Helmet Your Head program, which has been a hugely successful educational series targeting children at risk for injury, particularly head trauma.
Barrow's stroke education and screening efforts in partnership with the American Heart/Stroke Association target at-risk individuals to help increase the awareness of signs and symptoms of stroke. These efforts are also intended to apprise the public and emergency medical personnel of the value of certified stroke centers like Barrow that have capabilities to intervene with clot-busting thrombolytic agents, catheters that can retrieve vessel-clogging clots or deliver stents to keep blocked vessels open, and traditional cerebrovascular surgery to address vascular events.
Neuroscience Publications
The Neuroscience Publications Office helps the academic professionals at Barrow to generate more than 10,000 pages of academic material every year, including more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, dozens of book chapters, numerous materials for professional presentations, and the Barrow Quarterly. Almost all of the illustrations and animations on the Barrow website were developed by the staff in the publications office.
